Back On The Bus!

Yours truly has now found gainful employment. I was all set to become ‘dole scum’, too. Ah well…in celebration of me returning to “Working 4 The Man”, it’s a new episode of the K.S.

There’s a bit of chaotic motion at Gooroo Towers–decorating and that. Coupled with getting back into the 9-to-5 grind and creating a couple of mixes, it all leaves me a bit dazed. I kind-of grabbed all these tracks at random…really at random. Some of my CDs are boxed up, thereby making it easier to move them around the spare room, which is the main ‘gentrification’ point at the moment. So, I made do with what’s available.

So here you have it – a show made in a condition of flux. I’m hoping next month’s will be a bit more…er, precise.

The track list for this episode is:

The VerveFeel (from the “Verve E.P.” – released in 1992)

Roxy MusicVirginia Plain (BBC Session) ~ (recorded in July 1972 for John Peel’s ‘Sounds Of The Seventies’ programme)

30 Days Off

That’s right, true believers – I had the entire month of July off. Not by my choice, you understand. The ‘powers-that-be’ at my 9-to-5 gig decided to move my redundancy date up from September 30th to June 30th. Why? I’ll never know–you know, corporate logic (yes, that seems to be an oxymoron to me as well). I still received my full pay-out and this month’s salary, so I’m not complaining.

I hit the streets and found gainful employment once again. As of next week, it’s back to the grind. So why did it take so long to have this episode posted? A man about town like me has the days fill up fairly quickly….heh heh. No, actually, I discovered that due to using stick-on CD labels–some of my CD-Rs are having read problems. Ugh! That and the Maybe Logic Academy meet-up and job searching wiped out a lot of time. Hey ho – it’s ready now, so enjoy!!

Chocolate Kings On The Autobahn

Hello again, ‘Stroboscopers! Enjoying the sunshine?? The past few days have been scorchers! The goodwyf and I were away for a week, cruising the Shropshire canal up to Llangollen, in Wales. It were a good break and I celebrated my 40th birthday en route. So yeah, that’s why this episode is a wee bit late.

I didn’t go with a summer theme – but I’ve included what I would consider summer-y tunes in the mix here and there. The show may not be the perfect combo with yer Pimms and ice cream…but some of it will float by in a haze, like a breeze through a wheat field…or something. Enjoy!

The Terrific Twos!

Hello ‘Stroboscopers! It’s been two years since I fired this podcast up, over at MyPodcast. My original intention for this episode was to re-post the first ever K.S. show–since the original file has been lost. I may do that for next month’s one.

I then thought of something more interactive with you critters…an all-request episode! I know, I know…not the most earth-shattering concept. Still, it seemed more fun to me.

I asked you all to shout out some tunes and I had a fair few great requests….unfortunately, not enough to fill up the episode time. Not to worry– I decided to dedicate some tracks to a few of you peeps. Thanks to all who did make requests and thanks to everyone who’s listened over the past couple of years – I love you all!

Grab some cake, kick back and join me in celebrating the second anniversary of this here muso-podcast!

Olbas Oil Light Show

It’s that time again…time for a brand-new episode of the ‘Stroboscope. I crafted this one over the last couple of weeks, in between spring-cleaning the Gooroo abode and having a particularly nasty cold. Sorry for the somewhat unintelligible speech breaks between the tracks–I still wanted to do them, despite the illness..the show must go on and that.

No theme again this time either – but next month is the 2nd anniversary of the K.S., so I’m cooking up an idea at the moment. Enjoy!

Half A Can Of Caffreys And Some Crocuses

Welcome back, dear friends. Here’s the new K.S. episode, fresh out of the PC! I wanted to have this done in a few days, but as always, I had to divide my time up and I was only able to finish it over the course of a couple of weeks. I point this out because you may notice some time differences in my nattering, particularly in reference to Mark Linkous‘s passing and St. Patrick’s Day.

No theme to this one – just the usual ‘Stroboscope collection of tunes presented for your listening pleasure.

Rest in peace Mark Linkous and Happy Spring Equinox to all of you (even you spam-bots–hope you’re enjoying the shows)! Back soon with the next one.

Cold Days Of February

It’s been a cold winter this year, lotsa snow and chilly nights. I thought I’d collect some wintery songs for a show. I’ve created a mix of some well-known ones and a few obscurities. I had created an autumn show in 2008, but that’s been lost and I haven’t got a back-up–so this is my first seasonal episode at the new site. Get some mulled wine or hot cocoa, kick back and warm up to the sounds of the ‘Stroboscope.

I’m going to try and make each show about CD length (80 min.) from now, in case you want to download them and burn ‘em onto discs. This one’s a bit over, but you can cut out some of my jibba jabba, if’n you want. I won’t be offended.

Ten Years Gone – A Noughties Retrospective – Part 2

Alright, ‘Stroboscopers! Now that we’re firmly ensconced in the new decade, it’s time to listen back over the past decade. This is the second part of my retrospective, covering ’99 to ’09.

As with Part 1, I chose tunes from albums I bought during that time. I realise that there are hunderds of omissions, but as I didn’t have the dosh or time to listen to everything…these’ll have to do. My choices are ones that particularly appealed to me…not necessarily critics’ choices or records that made a lot of “Top Ten” lists. I also left out a lot more of my own picks, but really, if I had left them all in, this show would be about 4 hours long. I suspect very few have that much patience.

This concludes my ‘Noughties’ retrospective–back soon with the usual mixed bag!

Ten Years Gone – The Noughties, A Retrospective – Part 1

The first decade of the Gregorian millennium is nearly over..it seemed to fly by, didn’t it? I thought so. The Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times” never seemed more apt. This episode is a trawl through the albums I bought during the “George “C+ Augustus” Bush/Tony “Special Relationship” Blair/Vladimir “He-Man” Putin” years–what a party it’s been, eh? A lot of my heroes left the planet as well. So I’m not regarded as a complete downer…there were some great records released in the past ten years–and here’s the proof. Cast yourself back and party like it’s…er…you know the rest. I realise that the episode really only covers rock and other forms of popular music from the decade, but I couldn’t afford to buy CDs from a lot of other genres–hopefully another critter will document jazz, folk and world stuff.

Unfortunately, there’s no “Vinyl Vault” in this one, as I bought any new albums on CD–I am looking for some of them on LP now, but haven’t got any yet.

Warning: Some of the content may not be suitable for little ones’ ears–just sayin’.

Mix-Tape Reconstruction #1 – Psychedelia 1966-1973

HapshashAlbion1_1

Remember the mix tapes you used to make in the 80s and 90s, before recordable CDs and mp3s? Compiling a mix tape, as Nick Hornby pointed out in “High Fidelity” (and later on, John Cusack, in the film version), is definitely an art form. I wouldn’t say I ever mastered the art of mix-taping, but I would say I’ve created some interesting ones.

I’ve kept some of my tapes and I’ve thought of re-creating them as CD-mixes, but I’ve never got round to doing so.

I thought I would re-construct one of my tapes as a podcast episode, just for something a little different. I’ve kept the order of songs exactly as I added them to the cassette, as well as any spoken-word/comedy bits. There’s none of my jibba-jabba in between tracks in this episode, as I never used to do that on my tapes.

I hope you enjoy it – I may make this an on-going series. I’m aware that there are literally hundreds of excellent psych tunes I’ve left off – but then it wouldn’t be a “mix tape”, it would be 20 mix-tapes. This episode is for a friend of the show, John Cole, whom I was in an on-line course with a couple of years ago at the Maybe Logic Academy. I track-listed this mix and told him I would get him a copy. Here you are, John – sorry for the delay! :-)

*On the tape – the ‘Duckman’ bit is much longer, but I couldn’t be bothered to hook up the tape deck to the hard drive and record the entire thing. I could only find the much shorter wav clip on the interwebnets. If you get a chance to see that particular episode – the ‘trip’ scene is well worth watching.
